One of my favorite things to do at GenCon is to pick up some new nerdy shirts.  I may get this one before I go.

Gave Noah his new chess set yesterday... he just beat me in a game.  I was going to mate him on my next move, but I guess that doesn’t matter.

My 8yr old son, Noah, went to his first chess tournament yesterday.  He won the last of 5 matches.  The turn out was light so they had plenty of trophies, and he walked away with a "Top Unrated Player" trophy.  We talked a bit this afternoon about how he feels about chess now that he's had this experience, and he says that he enjoys it even more.  I ordered an official tournament chess set for him this afternoon and I can hardly wait for him to get it.  This was my first tournament too... it was very strange to walk around while being "sized up" by all of the other parents.  I'm not a parent that sits on the sidelines and yells, but I have to admit to feeling some satisfaction after Noah won a match against a kid that exclaimed "Awesome! I get to play an unranked player."

also, I can't seem to find my copy of Play Winning Chess by Yasser Seirawan... I may need it soon.

My tv was fixed today.  I'm glad the $1100.00 part was covered under warranty... and it's nice to look at a picture that's not all green with a giant blob on the right side.

Well, I just fought with 10,000 other nerds for Gen Con events.  While I didn't get into any Cthulhu events, I'm not terribly disappointed about that.  The registration server slowed to a crawl but I was able to get most of the events I wanted... and for those that care, here they are:

D&D Open Championship: Scions of Elemental Evil RPGA00002
A Game of Thrones: Birds of Prey RPG00870
Macho Women with Guns: Shave the Cheerleader, Save the World RPG00597
Mutants and Masterminds: Jupiter City #3: Dark Harvest RPG00569
NASCRAG Presents:A Little Revenge (Round 1) RPG00536
Hickman's Killer Breakfast RPG00010
Hero System - Champions: League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Through Time RPG00791
Zeppelin Pirates Over Hollywoodland! RPG00532

I'll also be trying to get a True Dungeon slot at 7pm... but I give that about a 2% chance of working.

Heading to El Paso, TX tomorrow to do a network site evaluation. Looks like it'll be nice and sunny... I'm hoping I have some time to head into Juarez, but I'll probably be too busy working. :(

What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Northern. Whether you have the world famous Inland North accent of the Great Lakes area, or the radio-friendly sound of upstate NY and western New England, your accent is what used to set the standard for American English pronunciation (not much anymore now that the Inland North sounds like it does).

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

Just sent some gaming supplies for use at the upcoming Ziggurat Con.  I sent copies of the D&D Dungeon Tiles... Sets 1, 2, and 3.  I used Amazon and it was very easy.  According to David Amberson, "Currently, we have plenty of nothing, so anything you send will be welcomed, and well-used."  If anyone feels inclined to send something... Here's the address:

Anyone watch "Thank God You're Here" last night?  Were you as dissapointed as I was?  I was just catching up on Wil Weaton's blog and I pretty much agree with what he has to say?

Some how... my 12 yr old son managed to get about a 1/2 cup of silly putty in his hair. Who would have guessed that Pam cooking spray is good for silly putty removal? Thank God for google.  And, as an added bonus I've got plenty of pictures that will be great fun about the time he's ready to graduate from high school.

I discovered twitter last night.... seems pretty cool! I'm going to play with it for a few days.  It's like a mini-blog where you can update via IM or SMS.   You use it to let the world know what you're doing.

Sometimes technology I’m familiar with still amazes me. My son, Noah, received a Nintendo DS for Christmas and has been enjoying it for the last few months. Today, he used some of his money to buy Diddy Kong Racing. I noticed on the box that the game uses the built in DS Wi-Fi for online games. I guess I shouldn’t be amazed but it was pretty cool to see him racing 3 other people on the internet using his hand held gaming system.

I'm on call this week... which means I work about 90 hours and get little sleep.  On a good day I can get about 2 consecutive hours.  I can't wait for monday morning.  I was just reading a cool article about IPv6... it explains it pretty well and it had a quote that I found funny.

"IPv6 first and foremost sports larger addresses. Much larger addresses. 40 or 48 bits would have given us more than a trillion or even 281 trillion addresses, respectively, and 64 bits would have been a nice round number. But as the axiom goes, once bitten, twice shy, so the IETF opted for 128 bits this time around. The total number of possible addresses that this gives us:

340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456

To put this into perspective: there are currently 130 million people born each year. If this number of births remains the same until the sun goes dark in 5 billion years, and all of these people live to be 72 years old, they can all have 53 times the address space of the IPv4 Internet for every second of their lives. Let nobody accuse the IETF of being frugal this time around."

You can read the entire thing if you feel inclined
